The Biles Legacy: Skills Named After Simone and How She Earned Them

Simone Biles isn't just one of the most decorated gymnasts in history — she's also a trailblazer whose impact is literally etched into the sport through skills that bear her name.

As of now, Biles has a total of five gymnastics elements named after her, across vault, floor exercise, and balance beam.

To have a skill named after a gymnast, the athlete must be the first to successfully perform the move at a major international competition, such as the World Championships or the Olympics.

The skill must be verified by the International Gymnastics Federation (FIG), judged as successful, and then officially added to the Code of Points with the gymnast's name.

The “Biles” on floor exercise is a double layout with a half twist — a move requiring immense airtime and body control.

Then there’s the “Biles II” on floor, a triple-twisting double backflip, which is among the most difficult skills ever performed in women’s gymnastics.

On vault, the “Biles” is a Yurchenko half-on with two twists off. The “Biles” on beam is a double-twisting double dismount, an incredibly high-difficulty move rarely attempted by others.

Most recently, she added the “Biles II” on vault — a Yurchenko double pike, which was so dangerous and unprecedented that it stunned the gymnastics world.
