How to Pick the Perfect Avocado

Check the Color Ripe Hass avocados are dark green or nearly black. If it’s bright green, it still needs time to ripen.

Gently Squeeze A ripe avocado gives slightly when you squeeze it gently. Too soft means overripe, too firm means not ready.

Avoid Blemishes Look for smooth skin without deep cuts, sunken spots, or large dents.

Even Texture The skin should feel bumpy (for Hass avocados), not too smooth or too hard.

Size Doesn’t Always Matter Big or small, avocados can be perfect as long as they’re ripe. Don’t judge by size alone.

Smell It A ripe avocado has a mild, pleasant smell. A sour or off odor means it’s too far gone.

Buy Unripe for Later Use If you're not eating it today, pick a firm, unripe avocado and let it ripen at home.

Use Both Hands Check multiple avocados—sometimes the one at the bottom of the pile is perfect.
