From Fresh to Frozen: The Right Way to Prep Strawberries for Long-Term Storage

Choose ripe, firm berries – Pick strawberries that are fully red and not mushy. Overripe berries don’t freeze well.

Rinse gently – Wash them in cold water just before freezing to remove dirt and pesticides. Be careful not to soak them for too long.

Dry thoroughly – Pat the berries dry with a clean towel or paper towels. Wet berries can stick together and form ice crystals.

Remove the stems – Hull the strawberries using a small knife or a straw pushed through the bottom.

Slice or leave whole – Whole berries are great for smoothies, while sliced ones work better for baking or toppings.

Flash freeze first – Spread berries in a single layer on a baking sheet and freeze for 1–2 hours. This keeps them from clumping together.

Use freezer-safe bags or containers – After flash freezing, transfer the berries into airtight bags or containers to prevent freezer burn.

Optional: Add sugar – For extra sweetness, lightly coat sliced strawberries with sugar before freezing.
