Squeeze, Sniff, and Smile: The Avocado Picker’s Secret Formula

Check the color. Hass avocados start out green and darken as they ripen. Look for a deep, almost black hue with a hint of green.

Give it a gentle squeeze. Ripe avocados yield slightly under pressure. Too firm? Not ready. Too mushy? Overripe.

Inspect the skin. Bumpy and textured is good. Wrinkled or cracked skin might mean the fruit is past its prime.

Flick the stem. If it pops off easily and reveals green underneath, it's perfectly ripe. Brown beneath means it's overripe.

Sniff near the stem. A fresh avocado has a mild, nutty smell. A sour or strong odor? Skip it.

Go by feel, not just looks. Sometimes an avocado may look ripe but still be rock hard. Trust your hands more than your eyes.

Plan ahead. Need it in a few days? Choose one that's still a bit firm to ripen at home.

Smile when you find the one. There’s something oddly satisfying about nailing the perfect pick.
